On invitation of the Belgian MacLaren Members we were at the big memorial place in Leper / Belgium to commemorate the British Soldies, who died in the World Wars, together with the Clan Hay.

After that we visited the Scottish Days at Castle Ooidonk. There both Clan MacLaren and Clan Hay were present with a big tent.

The idea of a non-formal community of Members of the Scottish Clans in Central Europe was especially mentioned.

German Clan Highland Games

updated 29.07.2009
On the evening before the Highland Games our Chief Dieter got a specific distinction. He was honoured from the Scottish Clan Chief Chief Cabarfeidh John Ruaridh Grant Mackenzie, Earl of Cromartie, through the President of the Clan Mackenzie Society Germany Markus Kewitz with the following wordings: Horst-Dieter Deckert is held in high esteem by the Clan Mackenzie because of his endeavours for the friendship between the Clans. Therefore we call him "Friend of Clan Mackenzie".

1st Meeting of the German Clan Societies

updated 16.11.2008
On November 1st, 2008 Markus Kewitz of Clan Mackenzie Society Germany und Horst (Dieter) Deckert of Clan MacLaren Society Germany were invited by Siggi Schierstedt-MacKay of Clan MacKay Germany in his home Sophienburg, to talk about combined activities. The three Chiefs decided to create Clan friendship.

With us were our clan piper Ralph Berger and his son Christoph (playing the snare drums), and two further members of the Clan MacKay. Our wifes were there also, of course. Sadly Markus couldn't bring his wife.

It was a very open minded and sincerely gathering, with a few whiskys and something to eat, and piping and talking, of course.

For the beginning we decided:
  • We'll have the Sophienburg as a worthy home for our combined activities
  • We'll do Highland Games together in 2009
  • We'll send a report about our clan confederation to our Scottish Clan Chiefs and to our Clan Societies all over the world
  • We'll celebrate Robert Burns Night dated January 24./25., 2009 and the celtic beginning of a new year Samhain on October 31 / November 1, 2009 in commemoration of our historic confederation.
A few photos are shown in the picture gallery.

Scotland Tour 2008

updated 16.11.2008
Our Scotland Travel Group was grown up to 14 people, thereof 6 Clan Members and 8 friends. Out of these friends Thomas Walther was established as new member from the Clan Chief. At Marching to the Field we represented our German Clan group with our new Society T-shirts. This year we were the biggest Society group from outside Scotland. Clan Chief Donald MacLaren encouraged us to establish our own German Society.

Ralf, Christoph and I took part in the Fishing Competition, whereas I won a trophy for the third time. Thomas took an active part in the Tug of War team.

Before visiting the Clan Games we were invited to play the pipes at Dunblane Cathedral. Sadly it hasn't worked with borrowing a snare drum for Christoph, so Ralph and I had to play alone. Anyway the visitors enjoyed it.

Next year we are invited to play at the Church of the Holy Rood at Stirling.

Together with our friends of the German celtic music group "Catalpa" we used to play in a pub in Strathyre.

This year we visited the Cathedral of Dunblane, several attractions at Stirling. In Montrose we enjoyed relaxing at the beach of St Cyrus and walking at Loch Lee in the Cairngorms. At the last day we had been in Edinburgh City.

We all enjoyed this years' trip to Scotland. All in all we shot a short video of Dunblane and more than 1,000 pictures, where a few of them are shown on this website in the picture gallery.

A wider selection of them will be installed in a data file in Google (the address will be shown on this website then).

A first performance were at a charity concert of the YMCA at Haan / North Rhine Westfalia. Here played Ralf Berger (Pipes) with his son Christoph (Snare-Drums) and me (Pipes) a few standard tunes to an enthusiasted audience.

Memorial

updated 17.07.2007
At the beginning of this year the National Trust for Scotland as trustee of the battlefield of Culloden have decided, after much lobbying by clan members, that the new battlefield marker at Culloden is to say "Appin Regiment: Stewarts of Appin and MacLarens" in memory of the joint fight for an independent Scotland. This is a victory for the clan and much credit is due to all the members of the various societies who put pressure on the NTS.

Clan Mac Laren honoured

updated 07.11.2006
Stephen Quillin, President of CMSNA gave us the good news that our Chief would be the 'Honoured Guest' and Clan MacLaren the 'Honoured Clan' at the Grandfather Mountain Games in North Carolina, USA next year.

This is indeed a great honour for the Grandfather Games are the largest games of the 350 or so games held each year in USA. They will be held from Thursday 12th July until Sunday 15th July. It will be a unique opportunity for our Clan and it is hoped that some CMS members may be able to attend in support of our Chief and the Clan.
